Seoul destination guide: arrival, neighborhoods, rail, food, and eSIMs

Seoul is simple to move around once airport rail, hotel district, and neighborhood days are planned together.

Plan Seoul Find stays

Overview

Seoul is large but well connected. The key is choosing a base that fits your trip rhythm: palace and culture days, nightlife, shopping, business, or cafe hopping.

Most visitors arrive through Incheon, which makes the first rail or transfer decision important. Keep that move attached to the flight arrival so the first day is not improvised while tired.

Best areas to stay

  • Myeongdong is convenient for first-timers, shopping, and central metro access.
  • Hongdae is stronger for nightlife, cafes, and younger energy.
  • Insadong and Jongno work well for palaces, traditional streets, and calmer evenings.
  • Gangnam is practical for business, clinics, shopping, and south-side plans.

Airport and arrival notes

  • ICN is the main international airport. AREX, airport buses, taxis, and transfers all work depending on hotel area.
  • GMP is closer for domestic and some regional flights and can be more convenient for central Seoul.
  • If arriving early, check luggage storage or hotel bag-drop options before planning activities.

Transport and rail tips

  • Metro is the default. It is reliable, extensive, and easier with mobile navigation.
  • Airport buses can be very convenient when they stop near the hotel.
  • For intercity Korea travel, keep KTX station choice visible because Seoul Station and Suseo serve different routes.

Things to do

  • Plan palace visits and Bukchon together, then leave time for cafes and markets nearby.
  • Use Hongdae, Seongsu, or Itaewon for evening and food-focused days.
  • Book DMZ tours, popular beauty appointments, and major shows ahead.

Food and neighborhood notes

  • Myeongdong is easy for snacks and casual food, though tourist-heavy.
  • Euljiro, Jongno, Hongdae, and Mangwon are better for deeper food exploring.
  • Keep late-night options near the hotel because metro closing times can shape the evening.

Connectivity and eSIM planning

  • South Korea is very app-driven, so mobile data is useful immediately after landing.
  • Install the eSIM before departure and keep airport Wi-Fi as a fallback.
  • Have hotel names and addresses available in both English and Korean where possible.

Trip planning checklist

  • Choose ICN transfer by hotel district, not just cheapest fare.
  • Attach AREX, airport bus, or taxi plans to arrival day.
  • Group palace, shopping, and nightlife days by neighborhood.
  • Set up eSIM before boarding the inbound flight.
